Uranus Bats Last

In this decade we have the three outer planets changing from negative to positive signs all within a small amount of time. In this blog I have descriptions for those three planets and what they represent in the modern world. What follows is a brief recap of how I see these planets.

Moving from the outermost planet, Pluto represents the One-Percent, the Deep State, everything with “Big” in front of its name, such as Big Agriculture, Big Pharma, Big Oil, etc. And of course the Military industrial Complex or the National Security State or the Power Elite or whatever term you are most comfortable with. As I’ve mentioned in a previous entry (https://500yearparty.com/2025/07/) the conflict between the Pluto Class and the Uranus Class (described below) is the major conflict of our time, playing out in many different forms, though many people (especially those in the Pluto Class or their enablers) want you to ignore this or pretend that it really doesn’t matter.

Neptune is the Virtual World (that is the World Wide Web) and also confusion and deception and disinformation. It represents everything that is not natural but artificial, such as — most notably in this current time — artificial intelligence. Many have compared the development of this virtual world to the invention of the printing press 500 years earlier. The first major item printed with movable type is called the Gutenberg Bible, printed in the 1450s under a Uranus-Pluto conjunction. But of course — since things moved much slower then — it took many years for the effects of movable type to be felt in Europe. Consider the Internet — first used in 1969 — and the World Wide Web — which made the Internet accessible to the average person — developed in 1993 under the Uranus-Neptune conjunction. The printing press had enormous ramifications for the world at large in the last 500 year; the Neptune World Wide Web will have even more profound effects on the world over the next 500 years. This shows the potency of Neptune, but along with it comes the mass confusion, lying, and gas-lighting. Perhaps Neptune will even bring forth a new spiritual mindset, since spirituality is also a manifestation of Neptune, even though it is extremely difficult to observe in most people and especially in governments. In the composition The Planets by Gustav Holst — something ever astrologer should be familiar with — the term associated with Neptune is “The Mystic”.

Uranus represents the people, those who are not in the Pluto class, the common folk, the ” salt of the earth”. In our modern world the dichotomy of Right versus Left is being replaced by the dichotomy of Up versus Down, where Up is Pluto and Down is Uranus. As the poet Shelley wrote in the Masque of Anarchy “Ye are many — they are few” which could be rephrased as “Uranus is many, Pluto is few”. This is the conflict that will be animating the upcoming years — we already see it playing out in real time — even though certain people (hint: Pluto) will try hard to get other people to not believe this conflict, or make them side with Pluto.

Outer Planet Ingresses

Here is a graphical ephemeris for the period from May 10, 2022 to the beginning of April 2027. It is in the sixth harmonic, which means the 0 Aries line — black horizontal line half way down with the red Aries sign to the left of it — represents the start of all positive signs: Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius, and Aquarius. Since Uranus goes into Gemini, Neptune goes into Aries, and Pluto goes into Aquarius all of those sign cusps are represent by that black line.

We see the first sign ingress is by Pluto (marked by the 1) in April of 2023. This indicates the rise of the Pluto Power. And looking at the real world you can see that happening on a daily basis. Pluto is finally permanently in Aquarius (at least for 250 years) in early November 2024, just in time for the United States election. Indeed the Pluto Class is riding high.

Pluto Final Ingress Into Aquarius

But for the United States we also see Pluto make a decisive turn: the Pluto Return — the first for a country since governments usually don’t last as long as one Pluto cycle before changing– which occurs in 2022 and 2023. Since this Pluto Return is unique for countries, what we are seeing now is also unique in history. Stand back and watch the Pluto Return plays out as you attempt to ignore it. Pluto first returned to its natal location in early 2022 (marked as 1) and the final brushing the natal position was late 2023.

United States Pluto Return

Then Neptune brushes with a change of sign (at 2 in Outer Planet Ingresses) in July of 2024 and then clearly moves into Aries in April of 2025, finally moving into the new sign for good (at least for 168 years) in February of 2026. And we can certainly see the signs of Neptune activity around us. Nothing is as it seems, we can not trust anything that is said or written or televised, not even your own senses. We have to check many sources. And the virtual world is getting overwhelming, with tales of people being swept up with these virtual events.

Final Neptune Ingress Into Aries

United States Neptune Demi-Return

For the United State we have a Neptune demi-return, which happens every 84 years, and in this position — opposite the natal Neptune — once every 168 years. This demi-return happens in in 2021 (at 2 above) and 2022. But there is also Neptune opposite the Midheaven of the United States and, something that will affect the world at large and not just the US, Neptune conjunct the Aries point. These happen in 2024, 2025, and 2026. So plenty of Neptunian confusion to go around.

Neptune At Aries Point and Opposite US MC

But Uranus has yet to fully change signs. That planet’s first ingress into Gemini took place in July 2025 (at 3 in Outer Planet Ingresses) but then retreats into Taurus. Uranus finally moves into its new sign in May of 2026 (at least for 84 years). Since Pluto and Neptune have been in their new signs for a time, it will take a while for the effects of Uranus to be clearly visible. There are already signs of its activities, but you have to be on the lookout to see them. Ultimately Uranus rules awakening and that is what humanity must do if it is to escape Pluto-Neptune trap that is engulfing the world.

Uranus Final Ingress Into Gemini

The United States will get heavy dose of Uranus in the second half of this decade. First we have Uranus square the Moon of the US in 2025 and 2026 (at 1 below). Then we have the Uranus Return for the United States, the third such since the birth of the country — in 2027 and 2028 (at 2). Finally we have Uranus crossing the Descendant of the United States in 2028 and 2029 (3) . Quite a bout of Uranus for the United States is coming up.

United States: Uranus Square Moon, Uranus Return, Uranus Conjunct Descendant

Notice that the final sign change of Neptune occurs just a few months before the final sign change of Uranus. Thus we will see all the Neptunian fog over the Uranian change and thus be unable to really see what is going on. Thus when the final Uranian awakening takes places it will come as a complete surprise to most people and to the mass media.

This Decade As a Play in Three Acts

The play that is this decade can be divided into three acts astrologically. While you could also call this decade a novel with three chapters, a play with three acts is much more common than a novel with three chapters, so I’ll use the theater metaphor.

Just as in a play the first act sets up the characters that will drive the plot forward. In this case, as I’ve mentioned previously, there are three main events — Covid, Ukraine, Gaza (with the epiphenomenon of Donald J. Trump, who had appeared in the third act of a previous play) — that developed in the early years of this decade and will drive the plot of this decade forward. The third act is where the outcome is shown, the denouement (unraveling) of the play occurs. The middle act is where the plot develops and the characters/events introduced at the beginning behave in ways that will lead to the final outcomes. We are in Act Two now.

Neptune Demi-Return

The first act has as its highlights the Pluto return and the Neptune demi-return. The Pluto return has never occurred before in American history — the 250th anniversary of America is coming up in 2026 and the cycle of Pluto is approximately 250 years so you do the math. The Neptune demi-return occurred before in 1859. The previous Neptune Return was in 1940. The previous post summarized Act One in more detail.

Neptune Demi-Return 1859

Neptune Return

The second act consists of Uranus square the US Moon, Neptune opposite the U S Midheaven and also on the Aries point. As a special bonus we have Saturn conjunct Neptune when Neptune is at those points. This conjunction happened before in 1989 (without Aries Point involvement) which saw the fall of Communist countries in Europe and then the fall of the Soviet Union. This represented a major change in the Twentieth Century. Uranus made a previous opening square to the US Moon in 1941 and most Americans know what happened at that time. The previous Uranus conjunct the Moon happened in 2003 when the US attacked the country of Iraq in what is called the Second Gulf War. So the most likely scenario is a war starting, but already we have so many wars that is difficult to keep track. There is the most overt war between the United States and Russia since the end of the First World War, when President Wilson (along with many other countries) sent troops into Russia to defeat the Russian Revolution. We have a war, financed by the US, of Israel in Gaza. Other possible wars are with Iran and Venezuela. And of course there is always China. And more soon to come. This is not what were expecting by a “Peace President”.

During this act all three other planets change sign: Pluto goes into Aquarius (2023 and 2024) Neptune goes into Aries (2024, 2025, and 2026) and Uranus goes into Gemini (2025 and 2026).

Uranus Enters Gemini 2026

Neptune Enters Aries 2026

Pluto Enters Aquarius Late 2024

The last time these three outer planets changed into those signs was in the period 1523 through 1534, a much longer period than this time. which allowed Uranus to move into Cancer before Neptune went into Aries and Pluto into Aquarius.

Uranus Enters Gemini 1523

Neptune Enters Aries 1535

Pluto Enters Aquarius 1532

To mark the half way point in this 500 year party, we saw Pluto go into Aquarius in 1778, Uranus go into Gemini in 1774, and Neptune go into Libra — the sign opposite Aries– in 1778 and 1779. This was the height of the Enlightenment which also saw the birth of the U.S. Some people have called the period we are entering the “Endarkenment” since the lessons of 250 years ago seem to be forgotten.

Uranus Enters Gemini 1774

Neptune Enters Libra 1778

Pluto Enters Aquarius 1778

The last act is the Uranus Return and Uranus on the Descendant of the US. The previous Uranus Return was 1943, 1944, and 1945. The previous Uranus on the US Descendant was 1944, 1945, and 1946. That period, the last couple of years of the Second World War and the early postwar period saw tremendous changes to the Unites States, the United States government, and the world in general. We are still living in the world created at that time. We also have Pluto conjunct the South Node of the Moon and a trine of Uranus and Pluto, which will be dealt with separately.

At the end of the play or novel that is this decade we need to get ready for the sequel: This has been a waxing decade and the waning decade pair (after the Jupiter-Saturn opposition which take place at the end of 2029, end of April 2030, and about Thanksgiving (US) 2030) will come after. Being the second half of a Jupiter-Saturn cycle we will see things developed that were hinted at in the first decade of the cycle, much like sequels often do. For example think of the Seventies as a sequel to the Sixties or the Nineties as a sequel to the Eighties. Spoiler Alert: Even though we’ve seen plenty of Neptune so far in this decade, for the US the first three years of the next decade will see even more Neptune, with Neptune trine the Ascendant and square the Sun.

Jupiter Opposite Saturn 2030

Summer of 2025

This Summer will bring some important astrological formations which among other things illustrates the astrology of the decade. This decade sees the returns or demi-returns of the three outer planets. All in all it is a packed decade.

Grand Trine and More

On August 9, 2025 there will be a beautiful formation of the ten planets in both a world chart and in comparison to the US chart. While it does not suggest that anything will happen on that particular day, it does show graphically an overview of forces that are operative at the time. Of course, so many events of note are happening this year that there will certainly be some this August: it is like shooting fish in a barrel. Lets Look at them.

The Saturn-Neptune conjunction is at the Aries point. A Saturn-Neptune conjunction happens every 36 years; the last one was in 1989 which saw the fall of the Berlin Wall and in the next years the fall of the Soviet Union and related governments; that conjunction was in the middle of Capricorn. The one before that was in 1953 at about 20 Libra. Before that in 1917 in early Leo. I don’t know when previously there was conjunction at 0 Aries but it must have been a very long time ago. If we assume that every degree in the zodiac eventually sees the conjunction, and since the cycle happens every 36 years, then the last time this conjunction happened at 0 Aries was 360 times 36 or about 13,000 years ago

There is a mini-Grand Trine – a trine and two sextiles — between Uranus, Neptune and Pluto, with Neptune at the crux point which is also conjunct Saturn and the Aries point. Neptune is also at the midpoint of Uranus-Pluto. This midpoint configuration (and not part of a Grand Trine of those three planets) happens every 500 years, but the last time they formed an aspect was 2500 years ago — about 576 BCE — and that was a conjunction. Thus there is the midpoint configuration and the aspect configuration. The midpoint last longer than the aspect as can be seen in the two graphical ephemerides below.

Uranus-Neptune-Pluto Mini-Grand Trine

This graphical ephemeris is in the sixth harmonic so sextiles and trine look like conjunctions. You can see how the three planets come together in 2024 and stay together until 2029.

Neptune=Uranus/Pluto

In this graphical ephemeris the midpoint of Uranus and Pluto (slightly darker line) is plotted along with Neptune. You can see how closely the two lines stick together from 2023 through 2028 and are within a couple of degrees of each other from 2021 through 2031.

Saturn-Neptune opposite Mars along the cardinal axis. Mars is opposite that Saturn-Neptune conjunction right along the cardinal axis of 0 Aries/0 Libra. That gives more kick to the conjunction.

Moon semisquare Saturn-Neptune and sesquiquadrate Mars. Sun sesquiquadrate Saturn-Neptune and semisquare Mars, so that that Full Moon is a diagonal to the rectangle formed by Sun, Moon, Saturn,Neptune, and Mars.

And a Mercury Pluto opposition reflecting the Mercury Pluto opposition in the natal chart of the US.

And for good measure a Full Moon.

Transits Within US Chart

When we look at this chart within the chart of the United states it gets even more interesting. We see the following:
The Saturn-Neptune is on the IC of the United States and thus opposite the Midheaven of the US. That places Mars directly on the MC of the US. Thus the “spine” of the US — the MC/IC axis — is energized by the Mars opposite Saturn Neptune.

Transits to US Chart

Pluto and Uranus trine the US Midheaven.

Jupiter conjunct the US Sun.

`
A good graphical representation of how this complex of planets hits the Midheaven of the US chart is to look at a sixth harmonic chart. In the sixth harmonic trines and sextiles appear as conjunctions. If you look at the MC of the US you see quite a pile-up.

Sixth Harmonic Transits To US Chart

But earlier in the Summer there is another set of transits that pictorially are not as pretty but still important. The opening square of Jupiter and Saturn happens three times, the last time in Summer of 2025; this marks the beginning of the second half of this decade. But since Saturn is conjunct Neptune there is also a Jupiter square Neptune at almost the same time and in fact just three days separate the Jupiter Saturn and Jupiter Neptune squares.

Jupiter Square Saturn Last Time

Jupiter Square Neptune

Earlier in the Summer Uranus squares the Moon on May 15, the only time the square is exact this cycle. However on the first of February 2026 Uranus retrogrades to within a quarter degree of an exact square. These two images illustrate the exact square in 2025 and the almost exact square of 2026. Below that is a graphical ephemeris that illustrates the exact (1) and almost exact (2) squares where you can see that Uranus retrogrades and approaches the Moon but turns direct just before it squares the Moon.

Uranus and the Moon

Over the last few blog posts we’ve seen the important aspects which signify that the second half of this decade will be quite different than the first half. I discussed previously the Jupiter-Saturn square that signifies the beginning of the second half of the decade. Later I discussed the Saturn-Neptune conjunction that happens shortly after the third Jupiter-Saturn square and then finally in February 2026. This time we will discuss an important transit to the US chart that first occurs in late summer of 2024 (elections season) and will occur finally in early 2026 and that is transiting Uranus square the natal Moon.

Transiting Uranus aspects to the Moon of the United States (which simultaneously makes a hard aspect to the Sun) have shown up as an upset (Uranus) to the body politic of the people of the country (the Moon). Since Uranus has a period of 84 years, the quadrature aspects of Uranus to the natal Moon of the United States should happen every 21 years. Since such an aspect is coming up this decade, let us look at the transits of Uranus conjunct, opposed, or square to the natal moon over this history of the United States as a nation.

There is a question among astrologers whether an aspect manifests before the aspect is exact (called partile) or after the aspect is exact. In the following cases we will see examples of both though it appears that the act — war — happens after the aspect is exact more often than not. But of course remember that the aspects relate to something happening to the populace and in most case war is the concrete result, but that is only the outward externalization of a change to the people in the country.

Uranus in hard aspect — conjunction, square, opposition — to the natal moon of the United States is coming up. The first pass is in August and September of 2024 when it goes stationary retrograde right on the Moon; needless to say this is right before the November presidential election of that country. Then in the middle of May 2025 it makes a direct square to the Moon (and also a trine to Natal Pluto). Finally in February of 2026 it goes stationary direct within a quarter degree of the Moon. The United States will experience three years of Uranus squaring its Moon (along with many other interesting aspects that will be discussed in later posts) so it is instructive to look back at previous hard aspects between these two planets during the history of the country.

2002-2003 invasion of Afghanistan/Iraq after the attacks of 9/11.

There was a conjunction of transiting Uranus and the natal Moon in 2002 and 2003; this was the previous hard aspect between these two planets. The transit was shortly after 9/11 when Americans were braying for blood and it was easy to convince them that an invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan were in their best interests. The invasion of Afghanistan took place on October 7, 2001, less than a month after the attacks on 9/11. The invasion of Iraq, discussed earlier, happened about a year and a half later.

1980-81 start of New Cold War with RR also Iran-Iraq War

At the end of 1980 and 1981 Uranus was square the Moon. This period saw the election of Ronald Reagan and the start of the New Cold War (as one book titled it) and also the beginning of the Iraq-Iran war (the US was helping Iraq and Saddam Hussein! since Iran had held our hostages) and there was ongoing fighting in Central America in the countries of Nicaragua, El Salvador, and Guatemala. The USS Honduras (as some wag called it), was a military base set up to allows us to support the Contras, our proxy army in Central America. All three countries saw much violence and the United States was definitely involved, most obviously with the funding an oppositional army called the Contras in Nicaragua. As mentioned previously there was also a Saturn-Pluto conjunction in 1982.

1961-62 start up of Vietnam war

At the beginning of the Sixties – 1961 and 1962 – Uranus was opposite the US Moon. This was the beginning of serious American involvement in Vietnam; many think this did not happen until the Gulf of Tonkin resolution in August 1964, but earlier in the decade Vietnam was a big flash point. Early in 1963 a Buddhist monk burnt himself in protest of the war which had been picking up steam since John Kennedy had been elected. There were already student protests at some college campuses. The book by David Halberstan The Making of a Quagmire describes this period well and shows how the United States got involved in a disaster.

1941-42 World War II

In 1941 and 1942 Uranus squared the Moon in the same type of square that is coming up — this period was 84 years ago — one Uranus cycle before now. In fact the second exact transit of this cycle was on December 20, 1941, less than two weeks after the attack on Pearl Harbor that got America involved in World War II. The American people weren’t terribly convinced of the need to get involved in a war that seemed mostly in Europe, but after this square (“A date that will live in infamy”) there was much more eagerness to go to war.

1918-19 World War I, Red Summer, Prohibition, Palmer Raids

The effects of this square happened both before and after the square was exact. Uranus was conjunct the U.S. Moon in 1918 — as World War I was ending — and 1919 — as the Versailles peace treaty was worked out which was the official end of the war. America did not want to enter World War I and the President Woodrow Wilson ran for his second term — in 1916 — on the slogan ‘He kept us out of War’. Six months later he asked for a declaration of war. But there was a strong propaganda push to get America into the war, lead by among other people Freud’s nephew Edward Bernays. There was also propaganda about the Huns (Germans) raping Belgium nuns (stories of heathens raping our women have also been a popular ploy to get a nation involved in a war or for a lynching); there were people who would speak of the benefits of war before movies were shown, which though still silent were becoming very popular. After war was declared it suddenly became very popular with the masses, with for example a recruiting station in the shape of a battleship set up in New York City’s Union Square. (Suggested reading American Midnight by Adam Hochschild). But another “war” was coming up, though an internal war. 1920 saw the beginning of Prohibition in the United States which lasted until 1933. Prohibition saw a conflict between those supplying illegal alcohol and the government which was trying to prevent the spread of alcohol. Also unusual was the beginning trine between Uranus and Pluto which will be discussed at a different time. There was also upcoming what is called “Red Summer” which saw a lot of racially motivated attack (cf Tulsa Oklahoma) and the Palmer raids on unorthodox opinions.

There was also an invasion of Russia by the United States and several European countries as well as Japan in summer of 1918. This invasion was an attempt to stop the Bolshevik Revolution as part of the Russian Civil War between the “White” Russians — the Menshevicks (Kerensky) — and the “Red” Russians — the Bolsheviks. American forces remained in the country until 1920. All “good” Americans were already fearful of the Bolsheviks.

In June of 1919 several explosions occurred around the country, one of which was at the Washington, DC home of new attorney General, “Fighting Quaker” A. Mitchell Palmer. After the explosion, which did not injure Palmer, his wife, or their daughter, he was aided by Assistant Secretary of the Navy and neighbor Franklin D. Roosevelt, who discovered a collarbone of the bomber who was the only one killed by the blast. But this brush with death encouraged Palmer to start a war on dissidents since he couldn’t go after the bomber who was thought to be a member of a small Italian anarchist sect. Many people were deported as a result of Palmer’s actions. Palmer was assisted by the new director of the Bureau of Investigation John E. Hoover who probably did more than Palmer to round up suspects.

1896-97 Remember the Maine

All through 1897 transiting Uranus was exactly square the US Moon. The next year the Spanish-America War broke out. At the time Cuba was a colony of Spain and the inhabitants of that island revolted against their Spanish overlords. The US cruiser Maine was in the Havana harbor when an explosion took place on the ship. It is now widely assumed that the explosion occurred on board, but at the time it was believed that the Spanish had exploded a bomb attached to the Maine. That explosion led to America’s involvement in the War against Spain. As a result of the US victory, many of Spain’s colonies, including Cuba, Puerto Rica, and the Philippines, became colonies of America. The US base at Guantanamo Bay is a result of the victory in the Spanish-American War. Empire became a way of life.

1877-78 End of Reconstruction

The Compromise of 1877 was a very important event in American history and one can imagine things being much different if this Compromise had not happened but it is seldom mentioned. The election of 1876 was inconclusive and so votes were taken with the House, Senate, and Supreme Court to determine the winner. Finally the Republican Rutherford B. Hayes was declared the winner, but the Republican winner withdrew the federal troops from the South (something the Democrats wanted but the Republicans opposed) who had been there since the end of the Civil War; this withdrawal ended Reconstruction and allowed the Democratic politicians of the South to institute what came to be know as Jim Crow laws, as well as countenancing other activities that resulted from the absence of Reconstruction. Lynching of the newly freed people became a popular activity, one that sometimes drew crowds and photographers. The country has still not fully recovered from the effects of the Compromise of 1877.

1857-58 Civil War

In 1857 and 1858 Uranus was in Taurus (two Uranus cycles before now) and square the US Moon. This was the lead up to the Civil War which at the time many people could see coming. Henry Ward Beecher, a prominent preacher (whose sister wrote Uncle Tom’s Cabin) in Brooklyn was providing “Beecher’s Bible” (rifles) to abolitionists in Kansas which resulted in “Bleeding Kansas” as pro and anti abolitionists fought it out over who would dominate that state; also John Brown provided his famous raid on Harper’s Ferry in the next year which many consider the tipping point to war.

1835 Remember the Alamo Texas Revolution

The citizens of Texas, which had been part of Mexico, were trying to establish that territory as a new country. The Battle at the Alamo in that region started as a battle to defeat the Mexican authorities and make Texas an independent country. The battle at the Alamo was not successful, and Texas was finally taken in as part of the United States under the Presidency of John Tyler (vote was defeated) and then officially under the next President Polk.

1813 War of 1812

The British attacked America again after they lost the American Revolution, and this was called the War of 1812. During this war the British succeeded in in burning down parts of Washington, D.C. This always results in a strong reaction. The war is best known for Andrew Jackson’s Battle of New Orleans which actually took place after the peace treaty was signed but communications were slower then.

1793-95 Whiskey Rebellion

The Whiskey Rebellion was the first armed revolt against the new country which was in the first term of the first president. At the time whiskey was very popular (the amount of alcohol consumed in early America is simply astounding!) not only as a beverage, but also as a way of transporting corn. Many farmers in Pennsylvania were angry at the taxes levied on whiskey by the federal government. There was also a Uranus Pluto opposition during the beginning of this rebellion and in 1794 Saturn was square both Pluto and Uranus, making an especially potent conflict. 1794 was the high point and climax of the rebellion. In Europe the French Revolution was going full bore and Jacobins executed the King.

1773-74 Pre-Revolutionary fervor

While the official start of the Revolutionary War took place in 1775 with the Battle of Lexington and Concord, there was much anger leading up to that battle and there was for instance the Boston Tea Party in 1773. In 1774 Britain passed five acts to punish the United States for that party, including the Boston Port Act which closed the port.

Uranus Square Moon First Pass

This year and the next two years will see transiting Uranus square the natal Moon of the United States and also make a semisquare to the US Sun.

Uranus turns stationary retrograde on the US Moon in the last half of 2024, just before the Presidential election. It then makes a clean true pass in early summer of 2025. Finally it goes stationary direct on the natal moon in late winter 2026.

Uranus Square Moon Second Pass

Uranus Square Moon Third Pass

The Three Passes

Here is a graphical ephemeris showing the three passes of Uranus square the Moon happening first in September of this year when Uranus goes stationary retrograde on the US Moon at 1. Then in Summer of 2025 at 2 there is the only direct square. Finally Uranus goes stationary direct on the Moon in February 2026 at 3.

Uranus Semisquare Sun

Finally here is a graphical ephemeris to show Uranus making a semisquare to the Sun at about the same time as it makes a square to the Moon. We see this happens in early June of 2025, December of 2025, and April of 2026.

Crisis and Change

In the previous post I discussed the six crises that have beset American history with the sixth currently happening. Perhaps you haven’t seen the current crisis yet — to paraphrase Gil Scott-Heron, the crisis will not be televised, or for this day and age, the crisis will not be YouTube’d. It is only in hindsight that you can truly judge the strength of the crisis; who could predict the full scale of World War Two from the Japanese invasion of China. And even with a marked start of that crisis — Germany’s invasion of Poland — hindsight is better.

But there is another historical/astrological cycle that is important — what I’ve called in this blog in 2018 a Zeitgeist Change; these are shown by a midpoint configuration involving the three outer planets. This happens two or three times a century, with usually Uranus or Pluto as the apex planet.

There have been three zeitgeist changes in the Twentieth Century; each marked a major shift in the reality of the world. The German word zeitgeist means the spirit of the age and when the zeitgeist changes a new reality becomes dominate, so much so that people begin to forget that the world was once different than it is now — perhaps the current is a New Normal.

First Zeitgeist Change of Twentieth Century

In the first decade of the Twentieth Century such a midpoint configuration existed with Uranus as the apex planet. This period involved a change into the “Modern” world and in fact is a movement called Modernism, seeing for example the development of relativity and quantum mechanics, two theories that completely changed the scientific view of the universe. That decade saw the rising renown of both Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung; after their theories became popular the view of human behavior changed for good. Many artists such as Pablo Picasso and Wassily Kandinsky changed what was accepted as art. And while the automobile was invented in the latter part of the Nineteenth Century, the automobile became popular in this decade with especially the Model T Ford in America. Also invented in the previous century but became extremely popular in the new century were both personal photography with the recently introduced Kodak film camera and motion pictures which allowed everyone to see a new reality. And this first decade of the Twentieth Century also saw the first powered flight that changed the world forever and made it seem much smaller.

Second Zeitgeist Change of the Twentieth Century

The second zeitgeist change of that century was at the end of World War II. This was marked by the explosion of three nuclear weapons — two dropped on Japanese cities — which seemed to cleave time in two and marked the beginnings of a new world. This period has been described as the birth of the Anthropocene Age where so many things changed in a short period of time, the consequences of which would not be known for some time. The direction of many trend lines, such as that for the use of plastic or pesticides, took a rapid upward slant starting after the War. This midpoint had
the apex planet of Pluto which is totally appropriate for the beginning of the atomic age.

Third Zeitgeist Change of Twentieth Century

The third zeitgeist change was in the late seventies and marked the rise to dominance of the political philosophy known as neo-liberalism. Briefly, this is the philosophy that the markets are everything and that (to quote one proponent of neo-liberalism) there is no alternative. The apex planet in this case was Uranus. We now forget that time after World War II and before 1980 when the markets were not so all-consuming as they are now and the United States had the highest tax rate of over 70%.

The last time both events – crisis and zeitgeist change — happened in close proximity was at the end of World War II. With both these events occurring at the same time, the scale of the change was tremendous. Did this fifth crisis caused these massive changes that followed it or was it a coincidence? One can argue either way.

Crisis and Change in the Twentieth Century

Here is a chart that shows both the midpoint configuration zeitgeist change and the fifth crisis with Neptune near the MC and Uranus near the Descendant of the US. The date is that of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima.

Normally Uranus or Pluto are the apex point of the configuration, but once in every 500 years the apex planet is Neptune; this is the type of midpoint we are having this decade. The previous zeitgeist change 500 years ago brought us the modern world and all that entails with the printing press and the New World, a place that would be totally unrecognizable to a citizen of the Middle Ages or of the ancient world. This was the start of the 500 year party. We could say that we will move into what could be called the “Post-Modern” world if that term were not already in use. Perhaps a better term is a post-party world. As I’ve said before, after a party you have to clean up all the messes made and replenish all the items used up during the party.

Major Zeitgeist Change Sixteenth Century

The midpoint configuration 500 years ago lasted 1503-1507, about half as long as the midpoint this time lasts. We are moving into the Post-Party world, but unfortunately manfy people do not want the party to end. We will see a major conflict as this zeitgeist change takes place.

Major Zeitgeist Change Twenty-First Century

I have previously sketched out the opposing forces in this drama. One side has already let it be known what they want this zeitgeist change to be in books such as the Great Reset by Klaus Schwab (a Bond villain if there every was one) and in the slogan adopted in many places: Build Back Better. Several people have named this side of the drama with such names as Global Capitalism or Mr. Global, but I prefer the more inclusive term (as spelled out previously) of Pluto. ` But for the other side — called by some the Greek word demos (which is not short for demonstrations) which means the people and from which we derive the word democracy and for which I use the symbol Uranus — there is no plan for what the zeitgeist change should bring, no plan B at all. Some ideas have been floated, such as the People’s Reset, but the demos — Uranus — had better get its act together to fight against the plans that Pluto brings, because never in history have the Pluto people had the concerns of the Uranus people in mind. As George Carlin put it: “It’s a big club and you ain’t in it”.

Another way of looking at this split is in how people think about dealing with the upcoming problems of the world that we now hear so much about from political leaders to individuals such Greta Thunberg. It is now the end of the 500 year party but most people only recognize some symptoms rather the underlying problem. One way of dealing with these problems is more technological fixes where all vehicles become electric and we eat meat that is grown in a lab or insects also grown in a lab because those in nature are dying. This proposes a techno-industrial future where we will only live in a virtual world because the natural world is so toxic. This future has been prophesied for a long time — see the story “The Machine Stops” written by E. M Forster over 100 years ago. But at least (from the perspective of Pluto) things do keep on growing and there is money to be made so that is a good outcome. The people who support these ideas are called Bright Greens or as I call them the Pluto Greens.

The other greens (Uranus — the people’s — Greens) believe that only by de-centralizing the governments and de-industrializing the world, returning to the natural, and a policy of de-growth and embracing natural health do we have any hope of saving the planet. One can see this is directly opposite to the Pluto Greens: more growth and “green” industry (an oxymoron), escape from nature, and industrial medicalized health. But there is not as much money made from following the Uranus green ideas. Again we see this basic split in humanity, one that I have referred to often as Pluto versus Uranus or Global versus Local.

Another term I have heard about what the change could be from the Uranus side is called the Great Awakening, perhaps an echo of the Great Awakenings in American history (at least two) that appear to be associated with Uranus-Neptune conjunctions. Note that in the second half of this decade we have a Uranus-Neptune sextile, an aspect not nearly as dynamic as a conjunction, though in this case Pluto is closely involved. I’ve heard that there is a move to form alternative institutions to the current ones which have proven time and again to be hopelessly corrupt. The biggest area of accomplishment seems to be an alternative to the mainstream media; the term I’ve heard used for this alternative is New Media, the kind you won’t find on YouTube or as these folks call it GooTube.

For thousands of years people have lived in a hierarchical society where those at the top, perhaps called kings or patricians (Pluto), had a say over those at the bottom, perhaps called commoners or plebeians (Uranus). That is the same separation into two groups that we see in modern times though now those at the top are so much more powerful than those at the bottom than ever in previous history. Perhaps a real change of the zeitgeist would be to have a real democracy where there is no longer a hierarchical society, so this may be a time for a call for the end of Hierarchy.

The world is heading for disaster (bad stars) in so many ways — a library could be filled with books describing the ugly futures (dystopias) now in store. End of the world books and movies have been around for a while, see for example When Worlds Collide from 1951 (based on a 1933 novel by Edwin Balmer and Philip Wylie), but now the number of these has increased dramatically.

Note that this division between Pluto and Uranus — Up versus Down — is different than the more classic Jupiter versus Saturn — Left versus Right — which is a concept that originated in the French Revolution. People make a mistake if they conflate these two polarities. Supporting Uranus issues is neither necessarily Republican or Democratic though both political parties like to pretend they do.
`
The world has been under the leadership of Pluto for all these millennia. The wagon is racing out of control under the guidance of Pluto and it is demanding (to Uranus) that it be permitted to right the wagon. Pluto wants Uranus to believe that the problem is not with Pluto itself but rather it’s all the fault of Uranus and that Pluto has ways to keep the wagon on the road. Uranus must seize the reins of the wagon before it goes into the ditch. Pluto wants to keep the factions of Uranus separated and fighting among themselves so that Pluto has free reign. It is a long standing dogma of Pluto and why they fear real democracy (cf James Madison): those folks really don’t have the wisdom that Pluto has and so as their betters Pluto must lead them as if they were children.

To sum up, the world is seeing a huge crisis in this decade, one bigger than World War II, more geographically widespread, and involving more death and destruction, followed by the biggest change in (at least) 500 years. This is not surprising since a crisis as big as this one is expected to be will alter society so much that a huge change should be expected. What we are also seeing in this ten year decade is the biggest conflict in world history, something that has gone on for millennia, but, I feel, is coming to a historical climax. This crisis is very big and I believe it is the crisis itself that will change radically how people think of themselves and their so-called leaders. But since this crisis has just begun things have a long way to go. Or as a Scottish friend once said to me: “Hold on to yer hairdos laddies a big storm is coming”.

With a Side of Uranus and Pluto

While Neptune is very important for its prominence at Zero Aries, both Uranus and Pluto are also prominent, each being sextile to aforementioned Neptune and in fact, trine one another. This is the opening trine of those two planets whose conjunction defined the decade called the Sixties, and a trine is a very positive but soft aspect. While hard aspects like the square are overt and demand attention, soft aspects are covert. That means that while the the Uranus-Pluto energies will be dominant in this decade, people will have to work to see them manifested since the trine is, unlike hard aspects, not visible at first glance.

Uranus Neptune Pluto

This aspect configuration will be more noticeable as the decade moves on in 2025 and later with Neptune at the midpoint of the Uranus-Pluto trine and will be seen to mediate between those two planets. What this will mean can more clearly be seen by looking at the symbolic representation of the planets Uranus and Pluto. Not only do we have the midpoint configuration discussed previously in a series called Zeitgeist Changes but also what is called a mini-grand trine, both involving these three outer planets.

The mere shaping and positions of planets can often provide an important insight into the chart without even considering signs, houses, aspects, or planets. For example, once someone unfamiliar with astrology saw my chart, and they immediately wondered why all the planets were on one side of the chart. The astrologer Marc Edmund Jones conceived of seven planetary patterns that describe the general tenor of the chart, and one of those fits my chart. These planetary patterns are so famous that for his 90th birthday, Jones was presented with a birthday cake covered with those patterns in frosting. Locations of prominent planets can also tell a story. In the chart of United States, the position of Uranus at the Descendant can be seen as representing the frontier as described by historian Frederick Jackson Turner in his famous “Frontier Thesis”. Turner said: “At the frontier, the bounds of custom are broken and unrestraint is triumphant.” There are even physical manifestations of astrological configurations. The Statue of Liberty is a Uranian figure and the Port of New York, where the outer world meets the country, acts as the Descendant of the United States, so the placement of that monument is the physical manifestation of Uranus on the Descendant. Similarly, Neptune at the Midheaven is a reflection of the eye at the top of the pyramid (and all its esoteric meanings) on the back of a dollar bill, and for this decade, we will see a powerful example of the positions of the outer planets suggesting the major conflict of this decade. These positions apply to the whole world and not just the United States.

Uranus Neptune Pluto Within US

In this astrological configuration involving the three outer planets as seen in the above charts, one can think of a teeter-totter or seesaw with Uranus on one end of the teeter-totter and Pluto on the other end, each one trying to be dominant. The fulcrum of the seesaw is Neptune with all the symbolic meanings we discussed previously; how those issues play out in the upcoming decade will help determine which end of the seesaw becomes the most powerful and controls the world.

All planets are symbols that encompass many meanings, and it is difficult if not impossible to assign an exact translation between the symbols (planets) and an English word or even phrase. These planets represent two opposing forces in this context, and it is difficult to specify exactly what they represent since they are symbols and not readily translated into English words. The best one can do is to give some keywords that conjure up images of what the concepts mean. Remember, they are symbols, and the best one can say is that they are Uranian and Plutonian principles.

Uranus Discovered

Uranus was discovered in the late eighteenth century at the height of the Enlightenment, right before the French Revolution and near the end of the American Revolution. Uranus was the first planet discovered by use of the telescope. It can be seen as representing the people, the popular will, and populism among other things in this context. Uranus was discovered by British astronomer William Herschel; the symbol of Uranus, a stylized H, is in commemoration of the discoverer though there is another symbol sometimes used that is somewhat like the Mars symbol. Uranus mythologically does not fit into the astrological meaning of the planet. Uranus and Gaea (who may have been his mother) were the parents of the Titans, who were the parents of the Greek gods. As the author Richard Tarnas points out, Uranus more like Prometheus, the Bringer of Fire than like the father of the Titans. In Holst’s composition The Planets, Uranus is called The Magician. It was discovered during the Enlightenment, which means the bringing of light, something that Prometheus did; however, for bringing the light to human beings, Prometheus was condemned to have his liver torn out continually after it regrew each night. Astronomers and speakers of Latin pronounce the name of this planet as Yer Anus since that is how the ancient Romans said it, but astrologers call it Yer a Nus, perhaps to avoid scatological meanings. Either pronunciation is correct.

Pluto Discovered

Pluto was discovered in the thirties, the decade of the twentieth century that saw the rise of fascism, large-scale organized crime, and the development of atomic energy. Atomic energy resulted in the the bombing of Japanese cities thus setting the stage for a new world. The Great Depression had started just four months before the planet was discovered by comparing two photographs of the night sky and noticing that something had moved. The twentieth century is the century of blood, with two world wars and many smaller ones. It was a century that saw the appearance of fascism (though one proponent of that belief, Benito Mussolini, thought it should be called corporatism instead). Now corporatism is called neoliberalism; Zen economist Rob Urie reminds us that neoliberalism is fascism with good manners.

Pluto was the ruler of the underground kingdom, and it is not much of a stretch to believe that Pluto rules what is now being called the Deep State, which is called many things from the military industrial complex to the national security state to what must be the most complete — MICIMATT, a term created by former CIA analyst Ray McGovern; this is an abbreviation for the Military Industrial Congressional Intelligence Media Academic Think Tank Complex.

The key word I use for the Pluto is corporations, but so much more is contained in the concept of Pluto, many which start with the adjective “big”: Big Tech, Big Banks, Big Pharma, Big Agriculture, Big Government, and Big Medicine. The Uranian side of the conflict refers individual and groups of people as well as small businesses owned by them. This can also be seen in the dichotomy global versus local, and of course people are very small compared to corporations.

We have two different forces, the Uranian and the Plutonian, which can be simplified as the forces of the people versus the forces of the plutocracy. Of course, this plutocracy (wonder where that word came from?) is much larger than just rule by the wealthy, which is the standard definition. These two forces have between them the various attributes represented by Neptune as mentioned in the previous post. This is the conflict that will play out in this decade, and the outcome of this conflict will determine the future of the world. To put it in simple terms, will the people control the world or will the corporations control the world? Neptune will determine the answer to this question.

Corporate media continues to use the term “conspiracy theory” to denigrate any opinion that differs from what they want you to believe. Calling something a conspiracy theory is like saying, “Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain.” Anyone who has not already drunk the Kool Aid of the standard narrative will suspect that this conspiracy theory is something that the corporations don’t want you to believe. The corporate media never seem to learn that censoring something just makes it more attractive. Perhaps the elite feel that they have the masses so well trained after years of indoctrination that it doesn’t really matter what they do.

The two major political parties in the United States pretend to be more or less associated with the Uranian principle, that is with people and their concerns. They do this because they still need the votes of the people since we still pretend this is a democracy. A study by professors Gilens and Page should have disabused us of that myth long ago. At one time, fifty years ago, one could even claim with a straight face that the Democratic Party was more associated with the Uranian principle than with the Plutonian one (after Uranus-ruled Aquarian Franklin Roosevelt set the direction of the party), unlike the Republicans (whose first President was Aquarian Abraham Lincoln), but that has long ceased to be true. At present, we have two political parties that do the bidding of the corporations (Pluto), but the Democrats are much better at pretending that they really support the people (Uranus), so in this fundamental way, they are less honest than their opposing party. This is not really a new concept: Just search for ‘Malcolm X foxes wolves’ to see that this concept was alive and well in the sixties.

In the last five years,he Democratic Party has become incensed at even the mere thought of Donald Trump, so much so that this extreme hatred was even given a name: “Trump Derangement Syndrome” (TDS). Trump made “the people” a Republican issue even if it was as phony as that of “Lunchbucket” Joe of the alternate party. The main problem is that the Democrats have a lock on “the People”, and they do not allow anyone else to drive in their lane — they do not like competition for the Uranus vote — that is not allowed!

Perhaps as a result of all the Sturm und Drang of this decade, a political party will be formed that truly represents the Uranian principle since right now both parties support Pluto. Perhaps this will be called the Populist Party even though that term is now met with great disrespect. This disrespect can be traced back to consensus historian Richard Hofstadter and his book The Age of Reform, which was a history of reforms in the United States between 1890 and 1940. Hofstadter was not always so much a liberal; as a younger person, he flirted with the Communist Party of the USA and once wrote a book calling prominent antebellum southern politician John Calhoun (Andrew Jackson’s Vice President in his first term) “Marx of the Master Class”. For an alternate view of Populism see the new book The People, No by Thomas Frank.

The most important question of this upcoming decade is which of these two principles — Uranus or Pluto — will dominate. Since the Pluto side controls the media which sets the narrative, those who get their information solely from the corporate media will, if only unconsciously, reflect the corporate talking points. Since the main alternative media outlets on the Web are being censored or bought out by the corporate masters, it becomes increasing difficult to get a perspective that does not reflect the corporate viewpoint. People must continue to try or else all is lost. One simple rule of thumb is to disbelieve whatever the corporate narrative is; assume everything they say is a lie. To be more refined, look at each individual item. If the story reads, “More people are moving than ever before” that likely does not involve the desires of the elites, so it may well be true. However, if the headline reads, “Designated enemy of this country attacks this country”, it is almost certainly a lie. Judging the truth of a corporate statement is increasingly difficult; In the sixties, the phrase was “Question Authority”; now it is “Distrust Anyone Who Questions Authority.” It is easier to get your truth from the corporate media since they mostly agree on each story. This is the narrative that you are supposed to believe, but if you go to alternative media, there may be different interpretations for each story, so it is harder to know what to believe or what the truth is. This is where research and the use of critical thinking comes in handy. It takes more work to not accept the corporate line, but if you want to support the Uranus side, it is necessary to think for yourself.

The censoring of dissident views is similar to in an earlier era the Catholic church censoring and excommunicating the early scientist Galileo. He was obviously promoting a conspiracy theory that the Earth revolved around the Sun even though all authorities agreed that the Sun revolved around the Earth. Nowadays, the way of communicating information is much different and much faster than it was in the seventeenth century when all they had were printed books; now the means of censorship is much faster.

Sometimes Satan Comes as a Man of Peace

We must be skeptical of the pronouncements of “authorities” because the Devil often wears a mask so that we are unable to see the truth behind those statements. Satan (Pluto) is called the Father of Lies and Bob Dylan put it more poetically in the quote above. Authorities may give people something they really want, for instance, a guaranteed annual income, but beware of the fine print. Corporations currently disguise themselves with all of the companies declaring that they are feminist or that they support Black Lives Matter. In a simpler time, there was the practice called “greenwashing” where a company portrayed itself as environmentally conscious to cover up some very unsavory practices. Now we have large-scale “Uranus-washing” where Pluto dominated organizations pretend that they are actually Uranus-oriented. Seen astrologically, this is Pluto dissembling (Neptune) as Uranus.

Uranus by its very nature consists of many who disagree about one thing or another. It would not be Uranus if all the people agreed on everything; that would be Pluto. This is the weakness of Uranus as far as Pluto is concerned. This divisiveness is helpful for Pluto, allowing it to keep the various factions apart and warring. One way of keeping the populace (Uranus) from joining together to fight the powers of the corporations (Pluto) is by getting those same factions of the people to fight among themselves, so they will not turn on their true enemy; if the people were united against the Plutonian forces, those same forces would be in trouble. Pluto know this and will spend much energy keeping the Uranian forces divided. One popular strategy is to get white people and black people to fight each other so that don’t see who is really controlling things.

The corporate owned network MSNBC (the MS stands for Microsoft!) convinces Democrats — their target audience — that all dissident beliefs are those of Republicans, Trumpists, or QAnon follower; the corporate owned network Fox convinces Republicans — their target audience — that all dissident beliefs are those of Democrats or the Left or Marxists. Democrats (not elites) and Republicans (not elites) are kept fighting between themselves, so the elites can go back to their business of plundering the world and making as much money as possible even as they destroy the planet. When different factions start to talk to one another, you will hear many say things such as “I never thought I’d be talking to people with those beliefs, but we do agree on this one important thing.” Now they are allies.

It has been said that there are two dimensions, not one, in political discourse: ‘Left’ versus ‘Right and ‘Up’ versus ‘Down’. The terms “left” and “right” were developed during the French Revolution when the supporters of the King sat on the right, and the supporters of the Revolution sat on the left; that spectrum is older than the French Revolution, and the ‘Right’ can be seen as Saturn and the ‘Left’ as Jupiter. Starting at that time, there have been more planets discovered, and that discovery has symbolized the expansion of human consciousness. What was considered in the aphorism given above as ‘Up’ and ‘Down’ can now be seen as Pluto and Uranus. What will be most important in the upcoming century will not be Jupiter versus Saturn but Uranus versus Pluto.

In this new century, we will see that Pluto (elites) are extremely worried that the masses will try to take (back) the power that is supposedly theirs to give. The elites (Pluto) are scared that people will wake up from their Neptunian illusions; all dissent must be extremely limited if not banned. Of course, that is suspicious; thus a certain amount of dissent will be allowed, but only if it stays within acceptable bounds. They don’t want the Overton window (explained in the previous blog entry) to get too large; Pluto defines the terms of debate.

Pluto holds most of the cards. It controls the means of communication and propaganda. Occasionally, a leader arises who could possibly unite the various factions of Uranus; however, these leaders such as Huey Long, Malcolm X, John Kennedy, Fred Hampton, Martin Luther King, and Robert Kennedy have all had accidents that prevent them from leading. It now appears that Uranus will have to merge its many elements itself instead of depending on a leader. Pluto’s problems are that it believes its own lies. If a scheme of Pluto becomes so big and even grandiose, there could be a breakdown and people would see that the emperor is not wearing any clothes. This could be a moment that awakens Uranus.

Note: After this was published, I noticed that Sun was conjunct Uranus with an orb of three minute at the time; that is a hopeful sign.

The Disenchantment of the World – Part II

We have seen the growth of a materialistic viewpoint over the last 500 years.  It started  very slowly but with the Scientific and Industrial Revolutions and the Enlightenment, that worldview has become dominant.  Scientists were praised as gods after the dropping of the Atomic bomb 75 years ago and that has not really abated in the years since.  And even those religions that claim to be rooted in the older worldview have subscribed to the modern materialism.  Everyone has so bought into the Cartesian worldview that any alternative is quickly banished or mocked.

In the current world, science is the new religion, and scientists are looked to as authorities just as in an earlier age religious figures were sought for guidance.  This is a direct example of Uranus killing Neptune.  In the modern age, science has been bought out by Capitalism whose handmaiden it has become, totally prostituted by Mammon.  As an example see how many medical organizations are funded by pharmaceutical companies who support a certain theory of disease.  It is no wonder that the promptings of science are increasingly disbelieved by the populace.  Consider such subjects as nuclear power, genetically modified organisms (GMO), vaccines, various psychiatric drugs for whatever ails you, wireless transmission for cell phones and WiFi and especially 5G, geoengineering, fluoridated water, even astrology.  I’m sure you can add or subtract from that list.  And for almost all of those items, corporations stand to make much money from the use of them. Though l’m not aware of any astronomers who make more if people disbelieve in astrology, astrology is such obvious nonsense to the scientific world view that scientists disbelieve and criticize the belief in astrology as a freebie, to show that they are honest.  Many years ago 86 scientists signed a letter condemning astrology (I remember this since my mother would send me newspaper clippings of this story).  Carl Sagan refused to sign that letter since he had not studied astrology.  That was a true scientist.

Science has been corrupted by corporations; as long as that is the case science will cease being believed even though it has truth to share.  In fact, a scientist recently wrote that “The case against science is straightforward: much of the scientific literature, perhaps half, may simply be untrue.  Afflicted by studies with small sample sizes, tiny effects, invalid exploratory analyses, and flagrant conflicts of interest, together with an obsession for pursuing fashionable trends of dubious importance, science has taken a turn towards darkness…  The apparent endemicity of bad research behaviour is alarming.  In their quest for telling a compelling story, scientists too often sculpt data to fit their preferred theory of the world.  Or they retrofit hypotheses to fit their data.”  That was a statement of the editor of the prominent British medical journal The Lancet, Richard Horton, in 2015.

A recent article published and then retracted by The Lancet (with the same editor) shows that this problem has not gone away.  The President of the United States has touted the long used anti-malaria drug hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) (with zinc, it is important to add) for Covid19.  The drug has been used without safety warnings for 70 years.  Soon after the recommendation a study documenting the health risks of such a regimen appeared in The Lancet.  The report was so dodgy one wonders why it was accepted in the first place.  Since HCQ is inexpensive ($20 for a two week supply), its use is a threat to the large profits that can be made by a vaccine.  It appears from analysis of the report that it was an obvious fraud.  This kind of scandal will again darken the name of science and medicine, being yet another example why science will not be trusted in the future.  So again Capitalism has bought out Science.  A sad day for science.  (On a personal note, as a college undergraduate I took many lab courses in both physics and chemistry and one of the first things a student figures out is how to fudge results.  Just sayin’.)  Doctor Horton explained this fault by saying that pharmaceutical companies are so powerful, and have so much money, that it is difficult to withstand their onslaught.

Technocracy is another word that indicates this over-dominance of the rational.  Technocracy was a political movement of the early Twentieth Century that has since become unpopular as a word but very popular in reality.  Both former President Obama and all of Silicon Valley are heavily technocratic.  The basic philosophy behind technocracy is that only scientists really know what is happening and so scientists should rule the world.  People think you must listen to science (Greta Thundberg on the occasion of Earth Day said exactly that) which is a direct statement of technocratic thinking.  But technocracy is not a new concept.  Francis Bacon, the father of the scientific method, wrote New Atlantis, a utopian novel published in 1626.  In this novel a Pacific island is discovered — this being the time when new lands were being found — that is run by scientists and where everyone on the island is morally superior.

Technocracy is an example of technological fundamentalism: technology will save us, which has been called (James Howard Kunstler) the Google mindset – ‘Dude, we’ve got technology so no worries’ and so we don’t have to change our way of thinking.  One example of this belief that technology will save us is the current negative reaction (and censorship) among environmentalists to the recent film The Planet of Humans produced by Michael Moore, who once was a darling of the Green Set.  Many in the green energy movement believe that once everything is electrified we will be be free to continue our previous lifestyle.  Many who don’t think of themselves as “climate deniers” nevertheless don’t really see that they deny the magnitude of the “problem”, which is not a problem but rather a predicament (John Michael Greer).  A problem needs a solution; a predicament needs a change so you can live with it, since the predicament will not go away once a (not the) solution is found.

Transhumanism is another concept promoted by technocratic oriented individuals, especially those around Silicon Valley.  Loosely, this is the idea that human beings can avoid illness and even death through technology, though one may wonder if the resulting being can still be considered human.  A current streaming show called Upload illustrates this belief in overcoming death through technology.   Expect to see more news about transhumanism in the future as the wealthy geniuses of Silicon Valley reveal more of their plans to the public, worked up about health threats from the latest pandemic.

Rationalism

While it is hard to produce a date and chart for this overriding event of the last 500 years, a good chart for the crux of this turning is found in 1821, just as the Industrial Revolution was reaching a wider world than just Great Britain.  It has been a doctrine of this blog that the outer planets and their angular relations are important in historical events.  Aspects of the three outer planets, such as the conjunctions of Uranus and Pluto in the decade of the Sixties or the conjunction of Uranus and Neptune in the decade of the Nineties were defining of the nature of that decade.  Even more potent are aspects involving all three outer planets, especially midpoints.  Also important for world events are aspects to the cardinal — Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn — points, as in for example the conjunction of Pluto with zero Capricorn as signifier of the Great Recession.  So it interesting to look at the aspects of the third decade of the Nineteenth Century, with Pluto a 0 Aries square the Uranus-Neptune conjunction at 0 Capricorn.  Many charts could be drawn for this period of time; the one I chose has Uranus and Neptune conjoined at zero Capricorn square Pluto at zero Aries; Mars is opposite the conjunction at one Cancer forming a T-Square with Pluto at the apex; Jupiter and Saturn are a few days past a conjunction showing the start of a new twenty year cycle.  There is also a Full Moon.  This is an important time for humanity.  And if you graph the per capita GDP for the world over time, it continually grows at a steady rate with only two upwards bends: around 1820 and just after 1945.

The Romantic Movement was a large reaction to the rise of rationalism in the Eighteenth Century indicated by the Enlightenment, the rise of laissez faire capitalism, and the Industrial Revolution.  This too is signified by this chart.  The Romantic Movement was an intellectual fashion during the late Eighteenth and early Nineteenth centuries in literature, art, and many other fields that emphasized emotion, intuition, nature, and a return to historical roots.  The planet Neptune is almost synonymous with the Romantic idea, as opposed to Uranus, a good symbol for the Rational, Enlightenment period.  Uranus was discovered in 1781 just as these trends were getting started, whereas Neptune was discovered near the End of the Romantic Movement in 1846.

In every case over these many centuries with hard aspects of Uranus and Neptune, Neptune was bent to Uranian principles, because that is what served the direction of society.  The way this manifested itself is what I call “Electronic Drugs”, the Electronic part suggesting Uranus and the Drugs part suggesting Neptune.  For example, in the conjunction of 1821, the “Electronic Drug” was photography.  We can not imagine, since photography is so common these days and many people take photographs many times a day, what an immense change this was from the norm of the preceding millennia.  The only fixed representation of a scene known by people before that time was a painting.  Then for the opposition of the early 1900’s the electronic drug was moving pictures, which again was a huge change from what had gone before.  Previously only in a stage play could one see life recreated, but with cinema this could happen often.  Also at this time George Eastman introduced the box camera so that individuals and not just professionals could create photographs.  Radio also was developed in this time frame.  Then for the square of those two planets in the middle Fifties the electronic drug was television, which had existed before but by that period became immensely popular.  Again this was a huge change where people could watch moving pictures in their home.  This also changed politics, for example in the Kennedy-Nixon debates of 1960.  Then, with the conjunction of the early Nineties, the world saw the rise of the World Wide Web, the Internet brought to the masses.  Video and more are now streaming.  Many more ideas are now set loose on the world, it could be a hard time for orthodoxy.  The web will be seen to have huge implication of most everything in life, and we are only beginning to see some of the changes.  You can see this with the censorship of the web becoming more and more popular.

But notice in every one of these hard aspects, Neptune has not really been manifested in a Neptunian way, one that is gravely needed.  Perhaps when Neptune goes to zero Aries and at the apex of Uranus and Pluto, these totally Neptunian manifestation will be shown.

World Wide Web

The development of the industrial world and all that implies was made possible by these scientific inventions of the last 500 years, and especially made possible by hydrocarbon based energy, first from coal for the first 100 years and then by oil.  This made growth the watchword of the industrial world.  Some have called the Nineteenth Century the Coal Century and the Twentieth Century the Oil Century; what energy source will define  the Twenty-First Century?

Growth is the mantra that all government systems – fascism, capitalism, socialism, communism, whatever — follow wholeheartedly.  This system of growth practiced by all governments worldwide is what is breaking down.  This was highlighted almost 50 years ago by a book called The Limits (Saturn) of Growth (Jupiter) which was immediately rejected by many “serious” thinkers upon publication in 1973.  What seemed as a fantasy by many people back then now seems like a description of the world.  The book’s projection of the world in 2000 is now seen as hewing closely to reality.  That book’s lessons on exponential growth is something everyone should know.

So this is the result of 500 years of rejection of an ancient way of looking at the world and thus disenchantment.

There are signs that the materialistic worldview in Science is changing, that there is a recognition that mysticism has something to teach science.  There are bookshelves of volumes indicating this, and the rush was started by the publication in 1975 of the book The Tao of Physics by physicist Fritjof Capra.  That field of study has only expanded in the last 45 years.  Those interested should check out the works of physicists David Bohm (“implicate and explicate order”) and biochemist Rupert Sheldrake (“morphogenetic fields”).  Many of the ideas expressed in these books extend from quantum mechanics, a major scientific revolution that started in the first decade of the Twentieth Century which I most closely associate with German physicists Max Planck and Albert Einstein, but many others contributed to the study.  These developments started under under the midpoint of Uranus (at zero Capricorn) at the apex of Neptune and Pluto, the first major zeitgeist change of the Twentieth Century that I pointed out previously.  That these  developments in what could be called “meta-physics” started with the ferment of the Sixties is nakedly indicated by the book called How the Hippies Saved Physics by David Kaiser.

Quantum Theory

I’ve discussed previously the predominance of Neptune in the next 10 years.  Combining this with the above discussion of Neptune as the irrational, one may read this as the end of the over reliance on the rational, that is a growth of irrational or Romantic in this decade as one possible interpretation of Neptune.  One of the trends we may see in this decade, still new and according to some not starting until 2021 (the argument being that there was no year zero) is an increasing respect for the irrational, the right brained, the feminine, the lunar.  We need to make the world whole again by bringing back the irrational.  We need a re-enchantment of the world.  Another useful book in this regard is by Morris Berman called The Reenchantment of the World published in 1981, which lays out another argument along the lines of this post.

But Neptune can play out in many ways.  For example, the powers in charge of the world are currently trying to form a Dickian (after the science fiction writer Philip K. Dick) world (called the Great Reset by the World Economic Forum) if we let them, and they are using Neptune to hide what they are doing from us.  Hyper rationality is being used as a cover.  (You don’t want to argue with Science; are you some kind of Luddite??)  Will we see through the illusion in time to wrest control back into peoples’ hands and restore democracy?  Neptune can go several ways and so which one will it be?  This dominance of Neptune also suggests (self) deception so we must be eternally skeptical of pronouncements and always look beneath the surface truths.  But Neptune also represents the Irrational as shown above, and perhaps this prominence of Neptune over the next 10 years represents the return of the irrational for a more balanced position in the world.  Perhaps this coming decade will see the re-enchantment of the world after 500 years of the growth of the rational.

Zeitgeist Changes — Part 5

The Fourth Turning is a 1996 book by William Strauss and Neil Howe that was recently popular during the election of 2016.  It postulates a crisis for America soon, because previous crises have bedeviled America ever 80 to 90 years since the Revolutionary War.  As astrologers, that time period should ring bells, and in fact the cycle has extended longer than Strauss and Howe imagine.  As has been suggested by this blog, it is unfortunate that historians don’t know astrology.  If they did, they would realize that this pattern extends from before the Revolutionary War and corresponds to planetary periods.  By looking at the astrological pattern, we can see this cycle has been occurring since the nation was founded, and is getting more intense with each succeeding cycle.  The period of 80 to 90 years is one Uranus cycle and one-half of a Neptune Cycle.  Let’s look (again) at what happened every 80 to 90 years in American history.

starve1

Starving Time

The first successful colony in what has become the United States was in Jamestown in what is now the state of Virginia in May of 1607.  The Winter of 1609-1610 is called the Starving Time: Of the 500 residents of Jamestown in the Fall, only 60 were left by the time Spring rolled around.  Domestic animals were killed for food, and some cannibalism took place, as shown in (for example) a New York Times story about a current archaeological discovery on the James River.  A fleet from England did finally come, but it had only more colonists and not food.  In the summer of 1610 (July 7) as they sailed away, another ship with supplies came and they all returned to the colony, which then was firmly established.  This was the first crisis of America.  If we look at chart for November 24, 1609, that winter of the Starving Time, we see that Uranus is on the Descendant of the United States.  However, looking at the next chart for November 24, 1614, when Neptune first came to the Midheaven, we see that it is a full five year after the crisis, and so this does not seem to fit the pattern.  Of course, in this example the crisis only lasted a few months, not nearly as long as the others did.  Or perhaps since there was no government (represented by the MC axis) there was no transit of the MC.  Note that in this case the Uranus conjunction occured before the Neptune conjunction/opposition, but those two will exchange places over the cycles.

king_wm_war1

King William’s War 1

Several wars occurred in the early colonies, called in general the French and Indian Wars, since both were involved, and each war got a name in the colonies depending on who was the ruler of England at that time.  They had different names in Europe, since France was also involved.  Both France and England had colonies in North America, and the French were allied with the Native Americans, and those two overseas powers were involved in several wars to determine who would have possession of the New World.  Spoiler: England won and would become the dominant force in the world for 150 years.

In 1688, there was the Glorious Revolution in Great Britain that replaced the Catholic King James II (son of King Charles I who was executed in the English Civil War) with Protestants William and Mary from Holland.  Thus the first such war in America was called King William’s War, and it was fought in 1689-97 with England, France, the American Indians, and the American colonists.  This was about 80 to 88 years after the Starving Time, and from the chart we can see that Uranus was at the Descendant during the War, Neptune reached the IC of the United State (not yet born) in 1697, three months before the end of the war.

king_wm_war2

King William’s War 2

Eighty to ninety years later, after all the French and Indian wars had died out, and after the important Seven Years War (1756-1763), which saw England defeating France to become top dog in the world, it was time for the Revolutionary War, and sure enough those two planets were in their correct spots.

Rev_war2

Revolutionary War 1

The official dates for the Revolutionary War are from the Battle of Lexington and Concord (April 19,1775) to the surrender at Yorktown (October 19, 1781).  This first image is for June 23, 1777; that date is not, as far as I know, a stand out date in the Revolutionary War.  Notice that all three outer planets are near their birth locations.  This is not surprising, considering that this chart is less than a year after birth.  What the chart does show is that Uranus is passing over the Descendant and on this date is exactly opposite the Ascendant for the first time since birth.  Again, not surprising since the natal position of Uranus is close to the Descendant.  Whereas the Ascendant relates to the personal projection – a good synonym is persona – the Descendant is the opposite point, and indicates how we relate to the outside world.  In personal astrology, this often is used to refer to the partner or people one draws to oneself or open enemies.  In either case, it refer to energy coming to us from outside, which can easily be seen as a war which also comes to us.

rev_war_i

Revolutionary War 2

In the second chart, for November 23, 1778 we see that Neptune has come to the Midheaven of the United States.  The Midheaven refers to the way the country relates to the outside world or vice versa; one can see it as a public persona as opposed to the private persona of the Ascendant.  Perhaps this suggests that a war, which involves the government (MC axis) of the United States is always started under the illusion of good intentions and a peaceful outcome.

civil_war_i

Civil War

And 80 to 90 years after the Revolutionary War, along comes the Civil War, sometimes called the Second Revolutionary War, for different reason depending on which side the speaker is on.  The dates for the American Civil War are from the firing on Fort Sumter (April 12, 1861) to the surrender at Appomattox court house (April 9, 1865).  For the the Civil War there is only one chart, for March 11, 1862.  The war had started almost a year earlier.  We see both Uranus opposite the Ascendant as in the first Revolutionary War chart, and Neptune conjunct the IC (Imum Coeli –the Bottom of the Sky) of the United States chart, opposite the Midheaven.  This is about one Uranus cycle, 84 years, after the first chart.  The fact that Neptune is now opposite the earlier position (the second chart for November 23, 1778) is not surprising since the period of Neptune is almost exactly double that of Neptune.  Note also that since the natal Uranus is close to the Descendant and the natal Neptune is close to the Midheaven, these periods are also close to a Uranus return and a Neptune bi-return.  But we do see a pattern.  Notice by this time both Uranus/Descendant and Neptune/Midheaven axis aspects occur at the same time.  We will notice later that the Neptune aspect will occur before the Uranus aspect.

WW2_1

World War II 1

The dates for American participation in World War II – the Americans were definitely late to the party – is measured from the attack on Pearl Harbor (December 7, 1941) to the surrender of Japan (Germany had surrendered 4 months earlier) September 2, 1945.  One notices that the wars get larger – more participants and over a larger area — and more bloody over time.  Starving Time in Jamestown only lasted one winter and less than 500 people died, though of course by percentage of population it is very huge.  Compare that to World War II, which lasted for the Americans four years and less than 500,000 Americans died, though it was a world war and many people from other countries, especially the Soviet Union that bore the brunt of the German invasion, died.

WW2_2

World War II 2

Let’s look at the World War II charts.  The first chart is for November 5, 1942, the first time Neptune conjoined the Midheaven of the United States in this cycle.  Then the second chart for World War II for August 6, 1944, one year to the day before the dropping of the atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima, the first pass of Uranus to the Descendant of the United States.  Also Neptune is very close – one degree beyond – the Midheaven.  This was again one Uranus cycle, and one-half a Neptune cycle since the Civil War.  The pattern repeats itself.  Notice how the Neptune aspect now takes place before the Uranus aspect.  The Descendant is where energy comes in to you from outside, and so Uranus on the Descendant suggests disturbance, upset coming into the country, like for example a war.  At least it was in the four cases we looked at.  Since we have only the United States as an example, and only five cases to draw upon, we can’t draw a definite conclusion.  But in every case there was, the correlation was exact.

What we have seen are five crises, starting at the birth of the colony at Jamestown and occurring every 80 to 90 years with increasing death, violence, and geographical spread, involving the United States.  The obvious question is when will this pattern happen next.  As you may already suspect, this is coming up soon, and this is one of several cycles that are coming due at about the same time.  We will leave for later the exploration of the exact date; but first, we must look at another cycle of great importance.

But how will the next turn of the Uranus/Neptune cycle manifest?  One might expect another war, even bigger than World War II.  This reasoning was what caused The Fourth Turning‘s notoriety during the election.   Several possibilities: Aliens from outer space will invade and the nations of the world will band together to fight them.  A bit fanciful, then perhaps it will be an asteroid that will be expected to hit the earth and the nations of the world will band together to fight it.  Or perhaps it will be a world wide fight between the 1% and the 99% since inequality will have become so much worse than it is now.  Several people consider the state of the United States so divisive and contentious – the term used is polarized — that a new civil war is expected to break out, so that is another possibility.  This period could see the Third World War, more horrible that the Second which occurred 84 tears before.  Or perhaps this will see the final collapse of the ecosystems of the world.  But since I’m an optimist (Jupiter conjunct Sun) my best guess is that the nations of the world will finally decide that the global crises are so ominous that they need to band together in a World War II-scale attempt to fight for the survival of the planet.  Of course it should have been done in the 1980s.  There is much more that needs to be said about this period, one of the most important of at least the 21st Century, but we need to have more background.  If this is the type of crises we will face in a few more years, it suggests that many things will happen between now and then to make the countries of the world think that that type of world wide response is finally necessary.  And they are, you need just to look around with eyes unblinded, which is difficult with the constant bombardment of information that we daily receive.  But the signs are all around, we just have to see them through all the chaff.

Change Will Come: Uranus Pluto Hard Aspects

urpl2015

Last Uranus Square Pluto

We are currently witnessing a square of Uranus and Pluto; the last exact square was on March 16, 2015.  Variants of this aspect have occurred before, and various commentators recognize this fact, even though they are unaware of the underlying astrology.  During the Arab Spring, the various Occupy movements, the sit-ins in Wisconsin, several people compared those events to the Sixties, the unrest of the Thirties, the  actions in the first part of the Twentieth Century, and even  to the wave of revolutions that swept Europe in 1848.  No one that I know of compared those events to the French Revolution or the English Civil War.  And no one remembers the Great Railroad Strike of 1877.  But all these have something in common.  And then I heard Glen Greenwald – who helped release the Edward Snowden revelations – complain that the information released was known years before,  but suddenly it became a topic of interest.    And then he said that it was like “something in the ether changed”.  And as we shall see, if not exactly something in the ether changed, something in the heavens changed.

urpl1966

The Sixties

Before this opening square of Uranus and Pluto, the last quadrature aspect of those two planets was in  1964, 1965, 1966.   Those were  the years it was exact, but of  course the influence extended beyond those years.  The first noticeable “Sixties” action that I  have been able to find is the lunch counter sit-in at a Woolworth’s in Greensboro, North Carolina on February 1, 1960.  Part of this lunch counter is in the Smithsonian.  Lunch counter sit-ins had been done before, but this one was different.   More people came to sit-in on following days.  The idea spread and was practiced in other communities.  In hindsight we can see this was the start of something big, and it is justly celebrated.  Another event took place that year – the release of the movie Psycho.  This was an unusual kind of a movie from a famous director – the main star appeared in her bra in the opening scenes, and this main star was killed well before the movie ended.  These things were not done in mainstream movies, and suggested (again, hindsight is very helpful) that a major changes in the cinama of Hollywood  was in the offing.

I  could go on and on about the Uranus/Pluto nature of the Sixties, but the phrase has almost become a cliché, and many people either love  or hate – neutral is hard to find – the decade.  But the things that people either love or hate about the decade very well show the influence of Uranus and Pluto, so when you think of the two planets together, think of that decade.

urpl1933

The Great Depression

The square of those two planets, the closing square before this conjunction, was in 1932, 1933, 1934.  This  was the depth of the Great Depression.  In the United States, people were extremely upset, and we had  a near Revolution that leaders were worried about.  Huey Long was making waves in Louisiana.  Roosevelt took office  in the midst of this and was able to relieve some of the pressure and “save capitalism from itself”.  Also in America there was another potential revolution that very few people know about.  This  is a fascist revolution that would replace the government of the United States.  See, for example, The Plot to Seize the White House by Jules Archer  (republished a few years ago as a paperback) and The Plots Against the President by Sally Denton.  But in several European countries,  things took a different course, with the rise of Hitler in Germany, Mussolini in Italy, and Franco in Spain.  In the Soviet Union, Stalin gained power the same year the the Depression hit and Japan was invading China.

urpl1902

Birth of the Twentieth Century

The opposition before this square took place in 1901 and  1902.  Many events happened in this period before World War I, which has been discussed  more in a previous post.  The Progressive Movement in the United States, the formation of the International Workers of the World – Wobblies – the First Russian Revolution, which  was  not successful and led to the second, more well know revolution, and  Gandhi’s  development of non-violence, announced on September 11 in South Africa, were some of the appropriate events of this period.  There was a rise in feminism at the time, and rebellions appear in several countries.  The book Vertigo World  by Phillip Blom outlines the changes that went on at this time.  There were other important aspects at the same time, and as  a result the changes in this period at the start of the Twentieth Century were quite complex.  In the United States this decade saw the rise of the Progressive  Movement, that claimed politicians such as Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson, architects such as Frank Lloyd  Wright, and historians such as Charles Beard.  Possibly the most important development in this period for the future of the world was the rise in popularity of the automobile, which has been developed several years earlier.  Spurred by the availability of Henry Ford’s Model T – unveiled on October 1, 1908 – America started its continuing love affair with the automobile, but Europe, where the automobile was invented, had loved cars even earlier in the decade.

urpl1877

The Great Railroad Strike

The square before this opposition was  in 1876, 1877, 1878.  The Great Railroad Strike of 1877  was the biggest labor action of that year.  There was many other labor actions in these years, partly because the Panic of 1873, a major financial depression which  may or may not have ended before the Panic of 1893 hit America.  Even though this was called the Gilded Age for wealthy America, for most of the others – the 99% of that age – life was not so rosy.

urpl1850

Year of Revolutions

The previous conjunction was in 1850, 1851, and 1852.  Mostly famously, 1848 was known as the Year of Revolutions in Europe, in which almost all countries in Europe underwent revolutions, though most were short-lived.  This was the year that a journalist named Karl Marx wrote the Communist Manifesto.  In the United States there was the Seneca Falls Women’s Rights Convention, which marks the first stage of feminism.  There were revolutions in other countries around the world in the next few years.  Hardly known by Americans, but extremely well known in China, was the Taiping Rebellion, which  started in December 1850 and went on for almost fourteen  years.  The Taiping Rebellion is considered one of the most deadly violent events in history, with an estimated twenty to thirty million civilians  killed.

urpl1794

French Revolution

The opposition before that was 1791 through 1795.  This marked most famously the French Revolution, especially the Time of Terrors which occurred when the conjunction was most exact.  There was also a rise of feminism, indicated by the publication of the book A Vindication of the Rights of Women by prominent feminist Mary Wollstonecraft,  who is  not as well known among among the general population as her novelist daughter, also named Mary.

urpl1710

Beginning of Industrial Revolution

The conjunction before that was 1709 and 1710.  This marked the beginnings of the Industrial Revolution in England.  The English restricted any release of the ideas that they developed into the outside world, so the Industrial Revolution did not exist elsewhere for almost 100 years.  During this conjunction Thomas Newcomen developed the first steam engine, that was later refined by the more famous James Watt.  Abraham Darby developed a way of making  pig iron using coke (instead of charcoal), which paved the way for complicated machines.

urpl1649

English Civil War

The opposition before that 1648 and 1649, which saw the height of the English Civil War.  Many radical groups formed  at this time, such as the Ranters, the  Diggers, and the Quakers.  Elsewhere in Europe saw he end of the Thirty years War, a shockingly brutal war that lay waste to much of the continent, especially Germany, and marked the end of religious conflict that had  grown out of the Reformation.  This war ended with the Peace of Westphalia, whose notion of sovereign states has been a basis  for international law in the centuries since.  The organizational work for the Royal Society (of London) was done during this  period, indicating that the Scientific Revolution was truly established.

urpl1597

Beginning of Scientific Revolution

The conjunction before that was in 1596, 1597, 1598.  This marked the beginnings of the Scientific Revolution, with Kepler and Galileo introducing Copernicus’ theories to a Europe that hadn’t know of them, and Galileo using a telescope to lead to a new understanding of the solar system.  Francis Bacon laid down the basics of Science, essentially advocating for what is now called the “scientific method”.  This time also saw the height of drama in Elizabethan England  with such writers as Shakespeare, Jonson, Marlowe, and Spenser.  At this time people’s way of looking at the world changed, as shown in a recent book by Philip Bell titled Curiosity.

urpl1456

Beginning of Printing Revolution

The conjunction before that was in 1454, 1455, and 1456.  This saw the end of the medieval Hundred’s Year War between England and France, the beginning of the War of the Roses, a popular subject to Shakespeare  and the first war of the modern era,  the fall of the Byzantine Empire, which sent many Greek scholars to the West, and the publication of the 42-line Gutenberg Bible, which was the first major book printed in the West.  It is hard to overestimate the importance that printing had to the developments of the next 500 years.

More details can be found in the book Cosmos and Psyche by Richard Tarnas, Section IV.

The Beatles

A couple of weeks ago we were treated to a boomer nostalgia-fest on the fiftieth anniversary of the Beatles appearing on the Ed Sullivan Show. This followed on the fiftieth anniversary of the Kennedy assassination and we will see many more fiftieth anniversaries over the next few years. How about the fiftieth anniversary of the Trips Festival on January 21, 2016? Of course, this summer we will have the centennial of the start of World War I. I’m guessing that more people are alive and in positions of power who remember the Beatles than remember World War I, and why shouldn’t they be nostalgic since in many ways this period is so unlike 50 years ago, even though we now have the first President born in the Sixties. Much attention has been paid to of late to how the minimum wage, in adjusted dollars, is worth so much less than it was in the Sixties, and, perhaps correspondingly, the spread of incomes is much greater than in the Sixties. People alive at that time remember how hopeful it all seemed, and now only those who are really wealthy can imagine that this is a hopeful time.

beatles

So I figured that I should do my part. Above is the chart for the Beatles’ appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show 8PM Sunday evening February 9, 1964. I didn’t expect to see much since this is not, despite what some think, a very critical moment. But I was wrong. We see the defining signature of the Sixties, Uranus conjunct Pluto, near the top of the chart. We notice Saturn conjoining the Moon of the United States, which it had been for a few months and would remain, getting even tighter, for the rest of 1964. The country had recently witnessed the assassination of the young and seemingly vibrant President, and so of course the people were depressed. But I want to point out aspects that were the most tight. Since I have added Harmonic Charts to the Definitions section I can discuss this event using one of my favorite techniques. These two aspects were transiting Uranus square the United States Uranus and the transiting Pluto sextile the U.S. Sun. Note that the two planets that define the Sixties, Uranus and Pluto, are the ones making the strongest aspects to the U.S. chart. The closeness is most obvious when we look at the harmonic charts. In the fourth, which shows squares as conjunctions, we see that transiting Uranus is almost on top of natal Uranus. Likewise in the sixth, which shows sextiles (as well as trines and conjunctions) as conjunctions, transiting Pluto is almost exactly on top of the U.S. Sun. In this chart transiting Uranus is opposite natal Uranus, because a square is a sextile and a half. Thus we can see that the “Sixties” planets were closely involved with the U.S. on the Beatles’ first appearance.

beatles4

So this period is more important than I thought. In the 84 year Uranus cycle, which has to do with among other things Change and Revolution, this moment was at one quarter of the way through this Uranus cycle that started at then end of World War II. This period was sort of a coming out party for those who were born around the time of the initial conjunction. That statement is almost a cliche but I find it interesting that it is shown so obviously in the transits at the time. The conjunction of Pluto with the Sun took place in the Twenties, which was a transformative time in its way. Forty years later we have the sextile between the two planets. With the sextile the transformation of the country is a much lower key affair, something that you wouldn’t notice except in hindsight. At the time people thought that this was just some crazy teenagers over-reacting to some long-haired youth from across the Ocean. With a perspective of fifty years, things look different.
